Carta del Prior General con motivo de la Solemnidad de la Virgen del Carmen 2014

Queridos hermanos y hermanas de la Familia
Carmelita:
Se acerca la fiesta de Nuestra Madre del Carmen
y, un año más, quisiera haceros llegar mi más cordial felicitación. Esta fecha
significa para todos nosotros un momento entrañable y festivo, en el que, con
gozo, celebramos nuestra devoción por la Madre del Señor, bajo la advocación tan
popular de la Virgen del Carmen. Un año más, quisiera poner bajo su intercesión
nuestros proyectos e ilusiones, nuestras misiones y apostolados, nuestras
alegrías y también nuestras preocupaciones. Que María, Nuestra Madre y Hermana,
nos ilumine, nos guíe y nos acompañe para que seamos fieles a nuestra vocación y
para que sepamos responder con generosidad a la llamada insistente que está
haciendo el Papa Francisco a toda la Iglesia a ser verdaderos
evangelizadores.
Como quizás recordaréis, el año pasado os sugería
una posible interpretación de un imagen típica de la devoción a la Virgen del
Carmen: la Virgen que desciende al Purgatorio y que salva, con su escapulario, a
los que sufren. Os pedía entonces que, a imitación de María, también nosotros
descendamos a los purgatorios de la existencia y de forma solidaria y compasiva
ayudásemos a los que sufren a salir de esos purgatorios de todo tipo que no
faltan en nuestro mundo.
En esta ocasión os pediría que todos los
carmelitas (frailes, monjas, religiosas de vida activa, terciarios, cofrades,
laicos de los diversos grupos que forman la “familia carmelita”), nos unamos
para contemplar, compartir y acrecentar, la belleza que (a veces, muy escondida)
existe a nuestro alrededor. Desde sus orígenes, el Carmelo está vinculado a la
belleza. El Monte Carmelo es sinónimo de ello en el Primer Testamento y todavía
nosotros hoy llamamos a María, Mater et Decor Carmeli (“Madre y
hermosura del Carmelo”). Nuestra Orden se ha caracterizado a lo largo de los
siglos por esa tendencia a lo poético, a lo artístico… a lo hermoso.
Por ello, os pediría que nuestras vidas
constituyesen una alabanza a Dios por la hermosura que nos rodea, y también un
compromiso generoso para que esa hermosura no se vea ensombrecida y afeada por
el mal, por el pecado, por el sufrimiento de tantos inocentes que padecen las
consecuencias del egoísmo y de todas sus ramificaciones (injusticia, violencia,
desigualdad…).
Que nuestras vidas como carmelitas, cada cual
desde su condición específica, se conviertan en un canto de alabanza al creador
y que -como María- también nosotros sepamos proclamar con humildad las
maravillas que el Señor ha hecho y hace en nuestras vidas (Lc 1, 46-55). Quizás
unos de los mayores dramas que vive el mundo moderno es su incapacidad para
generar belleza y para descubrir la belleza. En otras ocasiones, la belleza
queda reducida a un mero gozo estético, egoísta e insolidario, y entonces deja
de ser tal, no es auténtica y produce hartazgo y vacío. Y es que, como decían
los antiguos escolásticos, lo bueno y lo bello, el bonum y el
puchrum (si son tales) siempre coinciden.
Cuando queremos descubrir lo bello, María,
mistagoga y maestra de espiritualidad, orienta nuestras miradas en otra
dirección: hacia lo pequeño, hacia lo humilde, hacia lo que no cuenta… María nos
invita a descubrir la hermosura en los entresijos de la vida, en lo heroico y
noble que a veces no somos capaces de descubrir en la existencia cotidiana.
Que el día del Carmen, nuestras novenas y cultos,
nuestras liturgias y celebraciones sean también un canto humilde y sereno a la
belleza. No caigáis en lo rutinario, ni en unas celebraciones desganadas,
tributo a un pasado tan glorioso como lejano. No caigamos tampoco en una mera
belleza exterior, reducida a rúbricas y pompas, sino que ese día, nuestro
corazón sea capaz de elevarse -a través de la serena belleza de la liturgia-
sobre las miserias humanas y mirar a la “estrella del mar” para que Ella nos
guíe a Jesucristo, Nuestro Señor…
¡Feliz fiesta del Carmen! Que María, Madre y

Letter of the Prior General for the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carml 2014
Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Carmelite
Family
The Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is
approaching, and another year has gone by. I would like to offer you my best
wishes. The day means a lot to all of us, a joyous and deep-felt moment in which
we celebrate our devotion to the Mother of the Lord, under the very popular
title of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. One year more: I would like to commend to her
intercession, our dreams and projects, our missions and apostolates, our joys
and our concerns. May the Blessed Virgin Mary, our Mother and Sister, enlighten,
guide and accompany us, so that we may be always faithful to our vocation, and
know how to respond generously to the insistent call from Pope Francis to the
whole Church, for all to be true evangelisers.
As you may perhaps recall, last year I suggested
a possible interpretation of an icon that is typical of devotion to Our Lady of
Mount Carmel: the Blessed Virgin who descends into Purgatory and saves by her
scapular all those who are suffering there. I would ask you therefore that, in
imitation of Mary, we might each descend into the purgatories of today and in
solidarity and compassion, help those who are suffering to emerge from those
purgatories of every kind, of which there are many in the world of today.
On this occasion I would ask that every
Carmelite, (friar, cloistered nun, sister of the apostolic life, tertiary,
member of a confraternity, lay Carmelite member of one of the many groups that
make up the Carmelite family) be united in contemplating, sharing, increasing
the beauty which is all around us (even, if at times, somewhat hidden). Right
from the beginning Carmel has been closely linked to beauty. Mount Carmel is
synonymous with beauty in the First Testament, and we ourselves refer to Mary as
the Mother and Ornament of Carmel (Mother and Beauty of Carmel). Our Order has
been characterised down through the centuries by that tendency towards the
poetic, the artistic ... the beautiful.
Therefore, my desire is that our lives should be
a song of praise to God for the beauty that surrounds us, and also a generous
commitment to ensure that beauty will not be diminished or tarnished by what is
evil, by sin, by the suffering of so many innocent people, who are the victims
of selfishness and all its ramifications, (injustice, violence, inequality
.....).
May our lives as Carmelites, each in accordance
with our specific situation, become a song of praise to the Creator, and may
each of us, in imitation of Mary, humbly proclaim the wonders that the Lord has
worked and continues to work in our lives. (Lk 1:46-55) It may be that one of
the most tragic features of the modern world is the inability to generate beauty
or to discover beauty. At times, beauty finds itself reduced to something that
is purely aesthetic, self-centred, with no notion of solidarity, and therefore
no beauty at all, not authentic, producing only a sense of too much and of
nothing. The ancient scholastics used to say, the good and the beautiful,
“bonum” et “pulchrum” always coincide. That’s the way it is.
When we want to discover what is beautiful, Mary,
the teacher and master of spirituality, points our gaze in another direction:
towards what is small and humble, what is of no account ..... Mary leads us to
discover the beauty in the complexities of life, in all that is noble and
heroic, which at times we fail to see in day to day life.
May the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, with
its novenas and devotions, its liturgies and celebrations, be itself a humble
and peaceful song to beauty. We must not settle for mere routine, half-hearted
celebrations, the remains of a glorious but very distant past. We must also
avoid mere external beauty, nothing more that pomp and rubrics. No, on that day
we must lift up our hearts, through the calm beauty of the liturgy, over the
misery of humanity, and look at the “star of the sea” so that she may guide us
to Christ, Our Lord.

Cari fratelli e sorelle della Famiglia
Carmelitana:
Si avvicina la festa della Madonna del Carmine e
anche quest’anno desidero farvi giungere il mio augurio più cordiale. Questa
data è per tutti noi un momento caro e festoso, nel quale celebriamo con gioia
la nostra devozione per la Madre del Signore, sotto il titolo così popolare di
Vergine del Carmelo. Anche quest’anno desidero porre sotto la sua intercessione
i nostri progetti e speranze, le nostre missioni e apostolati, le nostre gioie e
anche le nostre preoccupazioni. Maria, nostra Madre e Sorella, ci illumini, ci
guidi e ci accompagni perché siamo fedeli alla nostra vocazione e sappiamo
rispondere con generosità alla chiamata ad essere autentici evangelizzatori, che
il Papa Francesco sta rivolgendo insistentemente a tutta la Chiesa.
Forse ricorderete che l’anno scorso suggerivo una
possibile interpretazione di un’immagine tipica della devozione alla Vergine del
Carmelo: la Madonna che scende nel Purgatorio per salvare con lo scapolare
coloro che soffrono. Vi chiedevo dunque di imitare Maria e di scendere anche noi
nei purgatori dell’esistenza per aiutare con solidarietà e compassione chi è
nella sofferenza ad uscire da questi purgatori di ogni genere che non mancano
nel nostro mondo.
In questa occasione chiedo a tutti i carmelitani,
frati, monache, religiose di vita attiva, terziari, confratelli, laici dei
diversi gruppi che formano la “famiglia carmelitana”, di unirci per contemplare,
condividere e accrescere la bellezza che, talvolta assai nascosta, esiste
attorno a noi. Sin dalle sue origini, il Carmelo è legato alla bellezza. Il
Monte Carmelo è sinonimo di essa nel Primo Testamento e ancor oggi noi chiamiamo
Maria, Mater et Decor Carmeli (“Madre e bellezza del Carmelo”). Il
nostro Ordine si è caratterizzato lungo i secoli per questa tendenza per la
poesia, l’arte… il bello.
Perciò, vi chiedo che le nostre vite siano una
lode a Dio per la bellezza che ci circonda, e anche un impegno generoso perché
questa bellezza non sia oscurata e deturpata dal male, dal peccato, dalla
sofferenza di tanti innocenti che patiscono le conseguenze dell’egoismo e dei
tutte le sue ramificazioni: ingiustizia, violenza, diseguaglianza…
La vita di noi carmelitani, secondo la condizione
specifica di ognuno, diventi un canto di lode al Creatore e, come Maria,
sappiamo proclamare anche noi con umiltà le meraviglie che il Signore ha fatto e
compie nella nostra vita (Lc 1, 46-55). Forse uno dei drammi maggiori che vive
il mondo moderno è la sua incapacità di generare bellezza e di scoprire la
bellezza. Altre volte, la bellezza viene ridotta a un mero godimento estetico,
egoista, individualista, e perciò cessa di essere tale, non è autentica e
produce solo un senso di abbuffata e poi di vuoto. Mentre, come dicevano gli
antichi scolastici, il buono e il bello, il bonum ed il
puchrum (se sono tali) coincidono sempre.
Quando vogliamo scoprire il bello, Maria,
mistagoga e maestra di spiritualità, orienta il nostro sguardo in un’altra
direzione: verso il piccolo, verso l’umile, verso ciò che non conta… Maria ci
invita a scoprire la bellezza nei meandri della vita, nell’eroico e nobile che
talvolta non siamo capaci di scoprire nell’esistenza quotidiana.
Il giorno del Carmine, le nostre novene e
devozioni, le nostre liturgie e celebrazioni siano anche un canto umile e sereno
alla bellezza. Non cadete nell’abitudine, né in celebrazioni stanche e
svogliate, tributo ad un passato tanto glorioso quanto lontano. Non cadiamo
neppure in una mera bellezza esteriore, ridotta a rubriche e sfarzo, in questo
giorno invece il nostro cuore sia capace di elevarsi, attraverso la serena
bellezza della liturgia, sopra le miserie umane e di guardare la “stella del
mare” perché Ella ci guidi verso Gesù Cristo, nostro Signore…
Buona festa del Carmine! Maria, nostra Madre e
